Shopping with Purpose

Homer Thrift is more than just a store; it’s a community cornerstone and a vital extension of South Peninsula Haven House. What began as My Sister’s Closet, a small initiative to provide clients with essential items as they rebuild their lives after experiencing domestic violence, grew into something much larger.  With overwhelming community support and an abundance of donated goods, Homer Thrift opened in November 2012, expanding its ability to serve both our clients and the wider community.

While we offer gently used items at affordable prices to make shopping more accessible and reduce waste, Homer Thrift’s impact reaches far beyond the sales floor. Proceeds directly fund South Peninsula Haven House’s core services, including safe shelter, crisis intervention, advocacy, prevention education, and support for individuals and families across the southern Kenai Peninsula.

Homer Thrift also supports survivors in tangible, life-changing ways by expanding its purpose and impact. Clients have access to clothing, household goods, and other essentials as they take steps toward rebuilding their lives.  For many, the store is also a place to gain job skills and experience, helping them step into independence and economic empowerment, which is essential for those who may not have had the chance to work due to the impacts of abuse.

Homer Thrift is a space for community connection and growth. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and abilities, and proudly partner with the Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training (MASST) program to offer meaningful employment opportunities for older adults reentering the workforce.

Whether you shop, donate, or volunteer, supporting Homer Thrift means investing in sustainability, dignity, and a more empowered future for our entire community.
